Harvard, Massachusetts native Sumner Whitney came to California in 1849 and began to publish law books 12 years later. In
1886 the firm merged with A. L. Bancroft and Company to become the Bancroft-Whitney Company, which continued in business as
a legal publisher until it merged with West Publishing in the 1990s.
